Delhi to Agra: Trains, Times and the Day Trip
The fast trains do it in about 100 minutes. Gatimaan Express is the classic — and like the Taj Mahal, it doesn't run on Fridays.

The train is the answer
Delhi to Agra is one of India's best-served rail corridors, with around eighty trains a day and the fastest doing it in a little over ninety minutes. Road takes three and a half to four and a half hours door to door, and flying is not an option — Agra's small airport handles only a couple of domestic routes and nothing from Delhi. Nearly all fast trains use Agra Cantt station, roughly six kilometres and fifteen to twenty-five minutes from the monument, with a prepaid taxi booth on site. Agra Fort station sits closer but sees far fewer useful services.
Gatimaan Express
India's first semi-high-speed service, launched in 2016, and still the enthusiast's choice. It runs from Hazrat Nizamuddin rather than New Delhi, reaching Agra Cantt in one hour forty minutes, with Executive Chair Car and AC Chair Car accommodation and catering included in the fare. Two corrections to what many guides still say: it no longer terminates at Agra, having been extended through Gwalior to Jhansi, and it does not run on Fridays — which, given the Taj Mahal is also shut on Fridays, is tidier than it sounds. Its top speed was reduced from its launch figure pending signalling upgrades.
The classic day-trip pairing
Out on 12050 at 08:10, arriving Agra Cantt at 09:50; back on 12049 at 17:35, into Nizamuddin at 19:30. That gives you nearly eight hours in Agra, comfortably enough for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, lunch and possibly Itimad-ud-Daulah. On Fridays, or if Gatimaan is full, the Taj Express runs daily and gives a longer day: out at 06:55 from New Delhi, back at 18:20 from Agra Cantt. Trains on this route average around ten to fifteen minutes' delay into Agra Cantt, so build a little slack around an evening return.
One train to avoid for a day trip
The Nizamuddin to Rani Kamalapati Vande Bharat, train 20172, is the fastest scheduled service on the corridor at one hour thirty-six minutes — and it is useless for a day trip, because it leaves Delhi at 14:40 and its northbound counterpart leaves Agra at 11:05. It runs the wrong way round the day. This is an easy mistake to make from a table sorted by journey time. The Vande Bharat that does work is 22470, departing Nizamuddin at 06:00 and reaching Agra Cantt at 07:40, running daily except Mondays.
Booking as a foreign visitor
General reservations open sixty days before travel, reduced from a hundred and twenty in November 2024. Foreign passport holders can additionally use the Foreign Tourist Quota, bookable up to a year ahead against a passport number, available through IRCTC, foreign tourist cells at major reservation centres, or the International Tourist Bureau at New Delhi station. Be warned that IRCTC registration for overseas users is genuinely awkward: international mobile verification frequently fails, email verification is the documented fallback, and the international card payment option often has to be enabled manually in your account preferences.
Road, bus and the airport question
By car, the Yamuna Expressway runs 165 kilometres from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Agra, taking about an hour and forty minutes on the expressway itself, plus forty-five to ninety minutes to get out of Delhi. Tolls run to a few hundred rupees each way, and winter speed limits drop between mid-December and mid-February because of fog. Buses take three to four hours from Kashmiri Gate or Anand Vihar. Agra's airport has no Delhi service and only a handful of domestic routes; treat flying as a non-option on this corridor.
