The rule: sunrise and sunset

Uttar Pradesh Tourism's visitor site states the rule plainly: on normal operating days the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. Because sunrise and sunset move through the year, so do the hours. Any page quoting one fixed time is approximating. The ticket counters at the Western and Eastern gates run to a different schedule, from one hour before sunrise until 45 minutes before sunset. That means they stop selling before the gates close. Look up sunrise for your date before you set an alarm.

Friday: closed to visitors

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing. The official fee table prints CLOSED against every visitor category on that day, and the tour listing says the same. The closure is specific to this monument. The same table gives Friday entries for Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh, and the official FAQ says the other monuments open from sunrise to sunset. So a Friday in Agra still works if you build it around those sites.

Sunrise or sunset

The official guidance favours sunrise: most visitors prefer it, the marble takes on a pink tone as the light arrives, and the early start avoids summer heat and some of the crowd. Sunset is described as cooler, with a soft silver light, but usually busier, so you need patience for a clear photograph. The site also says the monument changes colour through the day, so any hour can work. Choose by what you can tolerate: an early start for fewer people, or a later one for a gentler day.

Season and weather

The official FAQ names October to March as the best season, and the views page says most tourists come in the cooler months. Wikipedia's Agra article describes hot, dry summers with a hot west wind from roughly April to June, and a monsoon from early July to mid-September. It says weather moderates by mid-October and that winter brings dense fog, which often delays or cancels trains. If you travel in winter, leave slack around any train and treat a foggy first hour as possible.

From Delhi and back

The official travel page gives the road distance from Delhi as 204 km and lists Palace on Wheels, Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Gatimaan and Taj Express among the Delhi trains. Agra Cantonment is the main railway station. The Yamuna Expressway runs from Greater Noida to Agra. Gatimaan does not run on Fridays, which matches the Taj Mahal's closure. The guided tour linked from this site is listed at three to five hours on its own, so a Delhi day trip is a long day. Check train times on IRCTC, because timetables change.

From the parking area to the gate

Polluting vehicles are not allowed within 500 metres of the monument, so your taxi stops at a parking area. Battery buses and golf carts run from the parking to the gate. The Western Gate is the main entrance, and the Eastern Gate is the one the official site suggests to avoid crowds. The Southern Gate is currently exit only. There are separate queues for foreign and domestic visitors, and both gates have ticket windows and cloakrooms. Security screening applies to everyone, and large bags make it slower.

What to wear and bring

No official page lists a dress code, so wear what is comfortable in Agra's heat and for walking on stone. The tour listing suggests comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a camera. A water bottle is allowed. Shoe covers come with the foreign, SAARC and BIMSTEC tickets, and free shoe racks sit below the main mausoleum. Food, smoking items, drones, tripods, headphones, knives and mobile chargers are prohibited. Keep your phone silent or off, and carry the original photo ID you booked with.

How long to allow

The guided tour on this site's listing shows about two and a half hours at the monument and three to five hours in total. A visit on your own can run to your own pace. Wikipedia reports that fines for staying beyond three hours were introduced in 2019. The official pages fetched for this guide say only that visitors should stay as directed on the ticket or by ASI staff. If you have a fixed return train, plan to be out well before it, and count the walk and the security queue as part of the time.

Children, access and language

Children under 15 enter free, for domestic and foreign visitors alike. The official site says a wheelchair and a first aid box are available at the ASI office inside the complex, and the tour listing is marked wheelchair-accessible. A free Taj Museum sits inside the grounds. For language, the guided tour lists live guiding in English, French and Spanish. The official advice is to hire only approved guides and photographers who show an identity card, whichever way you book.

What you see and hear

The tomb is white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones, with Quranic calligraphy around the great arches. A red sandstone mosque and a matching building called the jawab stand at the far end of the complex, and the charbagh garden is laid out in four parts around a raised central pool. The official site describes the colour changing from pink to milky white to gold through the day. Inside, the octagonal chamber is known for its long echo, so the official request not to make noise is worth keeping.

Who this isn't for

This guide will not help if your only free day is a Friday, because the Taj Mahal is closed and no booking changes that. It is not for anyone who wants a fixed clock time, since hours follow the sun. It is not for night visits, which are a separate ticket on five nights around the full moon. And if you want interior photographs, note that photography is prohibited inside the main mausoleum. Travellers with a very tight train connection should also leave more slack than a standard visit needs.
